Only accessible by boat, the iconic white tower of the Chantry Island Lighthouse, can be seen all along the Southampton shoreline. The Southampton Marine Heritage Society have guided tours of Chantry Island and the Lighthouse regularly throughout the summer if you are interested in the rich history and seeing the Lighthouse up close – including going up the 106 steps if the lighthouse to the light itself!

Duncan McGregor Lambert became the lighthouse keeper in 1858 and according to his son, Captain William Lambert, planted a peach seed in 1859. 30 years later, this tree was still producing a large amount of fruit, which was extraordinary as peach trees were considered short lived, especially in the northern climates. A reporter from the Shoreline Beacon wrote about the perfection of the tree and the liberal sampling of ripe peaches in 1899.

Fun Facts:

  • Starting construction in 1856, Chantry Island lighthouse did not receive its lantern until 1859
