Big Tub Lighthouse – Tobermory

Our day began with the 1.5hr drive from Chatsworth driving up HWY 6 to reach Tobermory. We booked a trip with Blue Heron Cruises on the Blue Heron V glass bottom boat to see the shipwrecks in Big Tub Harbour and the flower pots on Flower Pot Island. We grabbed a quick lunch at Shipwreck Lee’s Pirate Bistro and headed to board the boat.

The cruise started with a tour into Big Tub Harbour where entering you could see Big Tub Lighthouse on the right. Once in the harbour you could see to wrecks through the clear water in the harbour. The tour guides provided information but it was very difficult to hear from the bottom deck.

The cruise then headed out and around Flower Pot Island. The beauty and calmness of the water was very relaxing. As it came time to see the 1st of two flower pots my youngest had to go to the washroom, a missed opportunity for a good photo shot. The boat then hooked up with another where it transferred those who wanted to hike on the Island, while our boat returned to the harbour.

We walked around the harbour, visited the dive shops and the Sweet Shop, and then we headed back into the car to take the detour at Big Tub Lighthouse. We got to the clue box to find we had to follow the light, the light lead us to the lighthouse where we could see how difficult it would have been to navigate the waters.

From here we left to Passport Stop #2. We will have to return to take a trip on the more famous of vessels, the Chi-CheeMaun to go the world’s largest fresh water Island in a fresh water lack, Manitoulan Island.
